Day 4 Reflection

Today,I learnt how to balance food intake =P

http://www.smartbalance.com/

That site is very useful for learning how to balance your food intake.

Besides that, food intake is regulated by the complex interaction of psychological and physiological events associated with ingestion. While the energy content of foods has an important role in determining the amount eaten, a number of other properties of foods also may be important.

Variations in the starch in foods could affect the amount consumed or hunger and satiety. For example, the preparation method, the food source, and the amylose/amylopectin ratio can all lead to different glucose/insulin responses and hormonal profiles

There are a number of reasons why dietary fibre can reduce food intake: high-fibre foods take longer to eat; fibre decreases the energy density of food; some fibres such as guar gum and pectin slow gastric emptying; fibre may reduce the digestibility of food; there may be increased faecal loss of energy on high-fibre diets; and fibre may affect some gastrointestinal hormones that influence food intake

Day 3 Reflection

Today,I found out what is important about a nutritional and healthy diet ?

A healthy diet is important for so many reasons. First of all, it can help delay the aging process. It can help keep us physically and mentally active well into our senior years. It can prevent cancer and diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It can help our eliminatory efficiency. It can give us more energy and help prevent fatigue. It can help grow healthy nails and skin and hair. It can help the healing process. It can improve our immune response and on and on it goes.

Day 2 Reflection

Today,I found out How is food processed and broken down and used by the body ?

Digestion involves mixing food with digestive juices, moving it through the digestive tract, and breaking down large molecules of food into smaller molecules. Digestion begins in the mouth, when you chew and swallow, and is completed in the small intestine.

We consume carbohydrates, fat and protein. Carbohydrates become sugar in the body. Carbohydrates are starches. They're simple sugars.

When we eat carbohydrate it goes into our bloodstream and it gives us energy. It gives you energy to us a race. It helps us learn, think and read or do mathematical equations. It's the body's fuel. Without glucose, without the ability to have glucose in your blood, we would die. It is vital to life =)

Fat on the other hand, is a stored form of fuel. In essence, both fat and protein can be broken down into sugar. So, sugar is what we all need to exist, to live our lives, and to have energy.

Day 1 Reflection

Today,I found that the Digestive System consists of

Mouth
Esophagus
Stomach
Large Intestine
Small Intestine
Anus and Rectum

Mouth

The mouth is the beginning of the digestive tract; and, in fact, digestion starts here when taking the first bite of food. Chewing breaks the food into pieces that are more easily digested, while saliva mixes with food to begin the process of breaking it down into a form your body can absorb and use.

Esophagus

The esophagus is a straight muscular tube that contains the four basic layers common to the rest of the digestive tract. Its function is to carry food, liquids and saliva from the mouth to the Stomach.

Stomach

The stomach is an organ in which acid secretions and digestive enzymes contribute to the digestion of food. It is an hollow organ which composes of several strong muscular layers. It is protected under the rib cage and is connected at at each opening to the Esophagus and Small Intestine. The stomach also stores, mixes and digests the food we eat.

Small Intestine

The Small Intestine is made up of a number of parts in which, all plays a part in Digestion. Food first enters your mouth, then goes down your esophagus into the stomach. After leaving the stomach,it enters the small intestine then the Large intestine, then out of the body.

Large Intestine

The large intestine is the part of the digestive system where waste products from the food you eat are collected and processed into faeces. It reabsorbs water and maintains the fluid balance of the body and absorbs certain vitamins.

Rectum and anus

Faeces is then released from the anus when Digestion is complete.
